How to create EDL Cable using a 4 Wire USB-C Cable

Simple method to create an EDL Cable using a cheap 4 Wire USB Type-C cable bought anywhere in South Africa.

 

Smartphones are increasingly the most in-demand gadget globally with every nine out of ten people holding it in their hands. Smartphones can also be troublesome if they stop working very well or get locked in certain situations. Mostly technicians are aware of the EDL cable and its use in the smartphone world especially when dealing with locked phones.

 

How to create EDL Cable using a 4 Wire USB-C Cable

So today I am going to share a simple way to create your own EDL cable without hassle. As technicians we realise that is not easy to get the EDL cable especially in South Africa because is expensive to import just one cable. Is just not worth it to spend more money on something that you can make if you know how to do it.

 

Things you will need before the process:

A USB Type-C Cable, A Push Button Switch, Wire Cutter, Two short wires, Insulation Tape, A hard Object (+/-5cm), Solder & Iron

 

In this tutorial we are focusing on creating the EDL Cable using a four (4) wire USB-C cable which can be bought in most electronic shops. The challenge is that mostly you get a five (5) wire USB-C standard cable but in our case we got the 4 wire cable instead.

 

So the first thing to do is to peal of the black plastic cover to expose the cables and do it carefully to avoid cutting cables. The inside you will find 4 Wires in different colours of White, Gray, Purple and Pink. Now the challenge is to determine which cables are Ground and CC in order to create the EDL. So for this cable I have determined that the Gray cable is Ground and the Purple Wire is CC, then now we already know which cables to connect.

 



So now solder the two wires on the Push Switch, then cut the Gray and Purple wires for about less than 1cm but not completely cutting off the wire. Then join each cable from the switch to the Gray and Purple wire, now solder the wires and cover them with a tape. The last thing for you to do now is to place the hard object below cable where the switch is place. The object helps in balancing the cable when you insert it on the phone while pressing the switch. Apply the tape to tighten the object, you can use plastic, steel or wood object as you see fit but in my case I used steel object.


 

Now you completed creating the cable and made sure is properly insulated with a tape because we don’t want any spark of fire because of not properly insulating.

 

Then now is the testing time for the EDL cable to check if it really works.

 

First you will need a Qualcomm powered smartphone which is working and a PC to test the cable. Make sure that the Qualcomm HS-USB QDLoader 9008 Drivers are installed on your PC or else it won’t detect.

 

Follow the Steps below for Testing the Cable:

 

Step One: Switch OFF the Phone

Step Two: Connect the USB cable to PC

Step Three: Press & Hold the Button of the Switch then insert into the Phone.

Step Four: Now Press the Volume Down 15 Times then Release the Button on the Switch

Step Five: You Should hear a Sound on the PC for detection

Step Six: Open Device Manager & Check Under Ports

Step Seven: You should now see Qualcomm HS-US-USB QDLoader 9008 (COM10) etc

 


Congratulations, you successfully entered the Engineering Mode of your Smartphone.

 

If it doesn’t detect first time the try the above steps again until you get it detected.
